PROVENANCE: Inscribed on the front endpaper of volume one by Henry N. Gladstone, and then underneath by Herbert J. Gladstone. Inscription reads:
“John W.B. Riddell from his friends Henry N. Gladstone and Herbert J. Gladstone on his leaving Eton Xmas 1867”.
Sir John Walter Buchanan-Riddell, 11th Baronet (1849-1924) studied at Eton, he was a British Barrister.
Herbert J. Gladstone (1854-1930) was the youngest son of William Ewart Gladstone Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He was was a Liberal politician and served as Home Secretary from 1905-1910. Henry N. Gladstone (1852-1935) was the brother of Herbert J. Gladstone, he became Lord Lieutenant of Flintshire, and Baron Gladstone of Hawarden.
A lovely 3 volume set in contemporary calf with a fascinating connection.
