WOLSELEY, Viscountess [Frances Garnet Wolseley] (1872-1936). Gardens Their Form and Design.
“I have sought to give suggestions for the perfection of gardens, both small and large, dealing not so much with the colour and arrangement of individual plants as with the lie of the ground and the planning of restful lines, as comprehended by the far-reaching Art of Garden Design”.
Interior: Pages age toned, browning to endpapers, pages un-cut (ie. still joined at the fore-edge) in many places throughout. In general, when issued the reader at the time would have slit the pages of the book at the fore-edge with an implement.
Exterior: Olive and tan quarter cloth (lacking dust-jacket).
Binding: Splitting to inner hinges at rear, revealing webbing, front inner hinges starting to split.
8vo. London, Edward Arnold, 1919.
Chapters include: Formal Flower Beds, Topiary, Suburban Gardens, Paved Gardens, Kitchen-Gardens, Garden Houses, Sundials.
PROVENANCE: Former bookseller’s notation to front endpaper: “Copy from authoress to H.R.H. Princess Mary…see card facing title page”.
Unfortunately the card mentioned by the previous bookseller has long since disappeared!
An intriguing possibility that this book could have at one stage been owned by PRINCESS MARY (i.e. the daughter Mary of Teck and King George V).
A interesting item with a curious history! PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CARD MENTIONED HAS LONG SINCE DISAPPEARED!
Please note that this book is of its time.
