“Since the publication of the “Spiders of Dorset” (1881) no list has been published of the “Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland”. Since then the numbers of new species have been discovered, and many have been found to be synonymous with others before thought to be distinct”.

Interior: Light browning to pages, occasional scattered foxing throughout, general internal wear, old clear tape repairs to margins at gutters, including repair at margin to title page.
Exterior: Later black, library cloth, new endpapers with original wrappers bound in. (Loss to corner of front wrapper with some loss to publication information, top left hand corner of bottom wrapper sliced off and lacking, both losses to upper and lower wrapper have been replaced/repaired with blank paper, wrappers soiled and worn). Date wrongly indicated as 1909 on spine, the work dates from 1900!

The dedication by Pickard-Cambridge is possibly and likely to be to the entomologist William Falconer (d.1943), and is heavily annotated throughout in a couple of different old hands. Octavius Pickard-Cambridge was an English clergyman and zoologist. The main focus of his writing was on spiders, his first published work was in 1853 in The Zoologist and his best known work The Spiders of Dorset . He was at the time the world’s authority on spiders, discovered 932 species. His library was bequeathed to the University of Oxford. His writing also encompassed Ornithology and Lepidoptera.
PROVENANCE: Old photostat Library bookplate to modern front endpaper “F. E. Cooper” and additional old printed label of “Dr. J.A.L. Cooke” to front endpaper. Also partially erased inscription to upper wrapper. The text is heavily annotated throughout by previous owners.
RARE book with an interesting connection.
