Interior: Light soiling to opening pages, spotting and foxing in places throughout, light soiling in places. Old pencil scribblings to paste-downs and endpapers. Someone at some point has given Dr. Johnson a red nose and lips on the engraved title page! Tear in margin, creating a hole in the first several pages- without loss to text.
Exterior: Full contemporary calf (worn) Red morocco title label torn with loss to title. Joints rubbed, splitting, general wear to calf. Rear joints split.

PROVENANCE: Inscription in a perhaps contemporary or early 19th century hand by a child:”Bertram Cleall” writing his name and letters of the alphabet on the front paste-downs and endpapers.
