The Poetical Works of the Rev. George Crabbe… [1834-1835]

CRABBE, George (1785-1857). The Poetical Works of the Rev. George Crabbe: With His Letters and Journals , and His Life, By His Son.

8 volumes, 8 frontispieces (one to each volume), engraved title page to each volume. 

Interior: Occasional sporadic spotting, light browning to pages commensurate with age. Clear tape repair at gutter to frontispiece,  adjacent to engraved title page to volume 3.

Exterior: Publisher’s brown cloth,  wear, tearing to spines,  (volume 3 has a small panel of cloth which has been re-adhered (crudely) to the spine) and general chipping/tearing to covers,  marks.

Binding: Occasional splitting to text block in places, splitting to gutters and internal hinges, binding a little frail in places.

[WITH]: ALS* dated 27th Feb 1884, adhered to front pastedown of volume 1, from the GRANDSON of the author REV. GEORGE CRABBE.

“Dear Mr Tuckwell, I have sent you by post the little edition if Tales if the Hall published by Edw? Fitzgerald. I also enclose a bit of the Poets writing if you care to have it- I hope you will come and see me in the summer. I am yours truly  Geo. Crabbe. “

George Crabbe (1819-1884) was the grandson of Rev. George Crabbe (1754 -1832). The former served as Rector of Merton in Norfolk. He was a close friend of the Translator Edward Fitzgerald translator of The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám.  It was whilst visiting Rev. Crabbe  at his home that Fitzgerald passed away in 1883.

The MR TUCKWELL in this letter is quite possibly the Anglican Clergyman William Tuckwell (1829-1919).
