The Most Interesting House In Warrington. (1899). VERY SCARCE.
£60.00PAGE, H. Stuart. The Most Interesting House In Warrington. 8vo. Warrington: The Sunrise Publishing Company, 1899. Chapters include: The Invitation, Epistle to Dr. Enfield. Letter from Principal Drummond, The Town Council and the Old Academy. This book celebrates the Old Academy building in Warrington, a teaching establishment (in non conformist religion) built in the 1750s. By the 19th century it faced demolition. This book as the Preface confirms is a virtual reprint of an article that appeared in “Sunrise” on April 25th 1896, with a few alterations. The article apparently very speedily ran out of print. [The editor of the “Sunrise”]…..realized the irreplaceable loss to the town that would be caused by the demolition of the Old Academy, which was then imminent. Almost single-handed he championed the cause of the forgotten institution, and by persistent effort succeeded in directing public attention to the matter, and arousing general interest, and some enthusiasm, in a scheme for the preservation of the historic house”. The building was listed in 1949. VERY SCARCE. OCLC locates 2 editions in three libraries.
