Yesterday evening on passing Carlisle, a telegraphic message was put into my hand, announcing the fact of the “Foam” having been obliged to pit into Holyhead, in consequence of the sudden illness of my Master. As yet, of course, I know nothing of the nature of the illness with which he has been seized. However I have ordered the schooner to proceed to Oban…”

Interior: Occasional light spotting, marks, and foxing, front endpapers detaching.
Exterior: Contemporary half calf, upper board and lower board hanging by a thread, spine back-strip is lacking, boards heavily worn, text block fragile and splitting.

PROVENANCE: “Charlotte Clark From Aunty” (inscription inside on front endpaper).
Extra illustrated copy- i.e. a previous owner has adhered/pasted various additions/clippings to blank pages and in other places in the book, including an illustration of Dufferin smoking a pipe! There are various other 19th century newspaper clippings which feature the Earl of Dufferin etc., additionally an envelope face which is made out to :John J. Clark, and is SIGNED by Dufferin on the bottom left hand corner.
In 1856 Dufferin commissioned the schooner “Foam” for a voyage around the North Atlantic. During his life Dufferin was Governor-General of Canada and Viceroy of India. He was popular within the court of Queen Victoria, and this book: Letters From High Latitudes regarded as a best seller of its day. Incidentally his mother Helen Selina Sheridan was the granddaughter of Anglo-Irish playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan.
A curious book with interesting associated ephemera.
