BAKER, Frank. I follow But Myself. (1968). SIGNED and INSCRIBED. 8vo. London, Peter Davies. British writer and actor born in 1908, completed his first novel in 1935. Miss Hargreaves  followed in 1940 (adapted for stage- performed at The Royal Court Theatre Club,  with tv, and radio adaptations).  Baker’s second novel The Birds was published in 1936. Many years later there was some controversy (from Baker) as to whether the Daphne Du Maurier had been based on his novel. The two were cited as being very different! However many years after the publication of Baker’s novel, the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name helped to increase sales of Baker’s book! I Follow But Myself   includes recollections on those friends who had most contributed to his life, each also had the distinction as Baker puts it “Each of these widely different men and women had one particular quality; they in their various ways followed but themselves”.
