The Oxford University Calendar For the Year 1816. Corrected to December 31st 1815.
“The University of Oxford is a corporate body, known for ages by the style or title of “the Chancellor, Masters, and Scholars of the University of Oxford;” a title confirmed by the legislature itself in the ring of Elizabeth. Its ancient privileges have been recognized (sic) and augmented by a long succession of Royal Charters from the earliest periods…”
[ii], xvi, 268, 273-312 pp.
Interior: The collation of this book appears to highlight a mis-pagination, as another recorded copy of this book also has the same gap between pages 268 and 273. General foxing, staining, and spotting in places throughout and wear, including some tearing with loss to blank margins in places.
Exterior: Contemporary, or early Victorian plum coloured cloth (faded, some wear, inner hinges split at front endpaper).
8vo. Oxford, J. Parker, 1816.
PROVENANCE: “Daniel (and partially erased letter possibly- ”C” Exeter Coll…(Inscription to front endpaper). Also marginalia in places. On page 144 “Exeter College” there is an annotation at the bottom. In the printed list of names on this page there is a one “Cave, Daniel”.
The Oxford University Calendar seems to first appear in 1810 (and is still produced today online and in the Oxford University Gazette). The publication contains lists of staff and students at the various Colleges and various associated information. A fascinating snap-shot of the period.
A very rare survivor.
