Rowe, 1820 King George IV who ascended the throne in 1820 attempted to divorce his wife Caroline of Brunswick. The case of adultery was brought before the House of Lords. Ultimately owing to public popular support and outcry the trial against Caroline was dropped. 800 petitions and nearly a million signatures were garnered in her favour.
